Guest Post: HOW TO CLEAN YOUR TEETH AND KEEP YOUR SMILE BEAUTIFUL

In-Office and At-home dental care can help one to maintain good oral health and help you achieve beautiful smile! Gum diseases caused by plaque and tartar buildup can be prevented with the help of the following measures:

  1. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE VALUE OF BRUSHING & FLOSSING!
  • Regular brushing and flossing can help to prevent plaque build-up and help to maintain oral hygiene.
  • For teeth cleaning always use soft bristled brush.
  • Brush bristles should be placed at 45-degree angle to the gingiva and moved in small circular motions. Brush the outer surfaces, inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces. Gently move the brush back and forth in short strokes. For the inner surfaces specifically, tilt the brush vertically with up and down strokes.
  • Brush atleast twice a day.
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3 – 4 months.
  • For flossing effectively, start with about 18 inches of floss. Wind most of the floss around each middle finger but leave an inch or two to work with. Hold the floss tautly between thumbs and index fingers. Slide it up and down gently between your teeth, followed by curving the floss around the base of each tooth to make sure you go below the gumline. Use clean sections of floss for every tooth.
  • Floss once a day.
  • Electric or Power assisted toothbrushes can be a good alternative to manual toothbrushes, especially for physically handicapped people or people who are less than diligent about proper brushing technique.

  1. OTHER CLEANING TOOLS
  • An interdental brush is a small brush i.e. designed to clean between your teeth, where a regular toothbrush does not reach. It is used to engage and clean interdental space. It should be used once a day. These brushes can clean better than floss when the gum tissue does not completely fill the space between your teeth. Interdental brush is also helpful to people with orthodontic brackets on their teeth to remove plaque from around the wires and brackets.
  • Mouthwashes with povidone iodine, essential oil or chlorhexidine can help to freshen the breath, add fluoride, prevent plaque buildup, reduce bacterial indicators of gingivitis and enhance your daily hygie
  • An interdental tip has a soft flexible rubber nib to clean between the teeth and just below the gumline. It removes plaque and food debris when run along the gumline.
  • Oral Irrigators – These electrical devices pump out jet of water in a steady or pulsating manner. They are effective in flushing food and bacterial debris from periodontal pockets and orthodontic brackets. They also serve as a media for delivering medications like prescription antibacterial rinses into pockets.

  1. PREVENT TOOTH STAINS BEFORE THEY HAPPEN

With age, teeth may get yellow. But somethings can help you to prevent staining.

  • One must limit staining foods and beverages like coffee, wine, tea, and dark berries. They don’t have to be completely avoided, but you should limit the amount of time these are in contact with your teeth.
  • One should avoid smoking and chewing tobacco, which are also known to cause staining.

  1. GET DENTAL TREATMENT IN A TIMELY MANNER

Dental conditions never correct themselves on their own. Long standing and untreated cavities can transform into a large tooth abscess. What could have been treated with filling will now require root canal treatment. Thus, dental treatments should be done in a timely manner. Similarly, keeping the teeth clean can help prevent gingivitis and periodontitis in the long run.

  1. FORM GOOD HABITS FOR GREAT SMILE!

It may take time before you start to notice changes from improved oral hygiene. While these changes won’t be evident overnight, they are certainly worth the time, patience and effort! Not only will it impact your smile, but also your overall health!
