Never Kiss Your Best Friend: A Twisted And Crazy Story Of Friendship

ZEE5 has brought to us a number of binge worthy series over the last couple of years and one of the recent ones is ‘Never Kiss Your Best Friend’. Starring Nakuul Mehta and Anya Singh. The story revolves around 2 best friends: Tanie and Sumer, who meet after 5 long years of separation. It is a heart warming story that redefines the rule of friendship.  It also brings forth the same age old question ‘Can a guy and a girl be best friends without falling in love?’

Premiered on 20th Jan, only on ZEE5, the series is adapted from Sumrit Sahi’s novel with the same name. Though there has been some modification and changes and the makers of the series have not completely followed the novel, the plot however revolves around the same as the book. The title of the series is quite self-explanatory and comes with a statutory warning, which the main characters of course does not pay heed to.

The series begins in a pub, with 27 years old Tanie Brar spending her weekend with her boring boss, just for the free alcohol, and also because she doesn’t have an otherwise happening life. However, things take a turn when she comes across her former best friend Sumer Singh Dhillon at the pub and the reunion takes them back in time. We get a glimpse of the time they first met at Sumer’s house, which is awkward to say the least, while their reunion is as unhappening as it can get. They eventually end up being best friends again.

The viewers can easily relate to the narrator- Tanie and can build a connection with her character. Tanie and Sumer are so comfortable with each other that they can share just about anything- from their first kiss experience to lingerie shopping together.  Among supporting characters we have Niki Aneja who plays Tanie’s overprotecting yet loving mother. While Rituraj Singh plays Sumer’s  over imposing dad who has a dysfunctional relationship with his son.

Apart from being a twisted and crazy story of friendship, the series also deals with topics like open relationship, drugs, homophobia and peer pressure. The series shot in London is a treat to the eyes, with picturesque scenes, families living in lavish homes and kids studying at Ivy League colleges. The series as the story goes will make you laugh, cry and dream at the same time. The music and cinematography of are also worth mentioning. Jaane na Dunga sung by Armaan Malik is quite catchy and can be played in a loop.

Overall, the 10 episode web series is binge worthy to say the least, with a story, cinematography and music that is quite soothing.  The story will make you fall in love with Tanie and Sumer’s friendship. The chemistry between them and their fun banter are quite engaging and keep the audience entertained.
