A Christmas to Remember: Bringing the Family Together in a Cosy Cotswolds Cottage

Ever since my sister moved to the UK, she has been talking about taking us to the Cotswolds. Every time we visited her, the subject would somehow come up. And I have always fantasised about spending a few days in the charming old English villages, in an old cottage where no new houses has been built in the last 400 years.

Perhaps it’s the hopeless romantic in me, but there is something incredibly appealing about the idea of staying in a cosy cottage, surrounded by picturesque countryside, in a village where history seems to live in every little corner. Some of these villages have retained their old-world charm for centuries, with honey-coloured stone houses, winding lanes and quaint little pubs that look as though they belong in a storybook.

And the thought of experiencing all of that with my entire family under one roof? Well, that has always sounded like a dream.

When we started making plans to visit my sister in the coming months, the Cotswolds plan finally came full circle. Only this time, there was an even bigger reason to make it happen.

Our First Christmas Together as a Family

This Christmas is going to be particularly special for us. Not only will it be the first Christmas we spend together as a family, but it will also be the first time all of us will actually be under the same roof.

It will be the first time I get to meet my niece, and the first time my son, who has grown up without siblings, gets to meet his only first cousin. I cannot quite put into words how excited I am about that!

There is something magical about the idea of watching the children discover each other, the grandparents having everyone around them, and the adults getting to enjoy those long conversations that usually get interrupted by distance, busy schedules and everyday life.

Naturally, we wanted to make this Christmas a little extra special.

Instead of booking separate hotel rooms or staying in different houses, we thought it would be lovely to rent a large holiday cottage in the picturesque Cotswolds for Christmas. Somewhere spacious enough for my family, my sister’s family and my parents, where we could all enjoy the festivities together without worrying about space.

And that’s how I came across Stay Cotswold.

Finding the Perfect Large Holiday Cottage in the Cotswolds

One of the first things I realised while planning this trip was that finding accommodation for a large family is not quite as straightforward as booking a hotel room. You need enough bedrooms, comfortable shared spaces, a proper dining area where everyone can sit together, and ideally a beautiful outdoor space to enjoy when the weather permits.

This is where holiday cottages have a charm of their own.

Unlike conventional hotel stays, a cottage gives you the freedom to make the place your own for a few days. You can prepare breakfast together, spend an entire afternoon playing board games, cook a festive dinner, or simply sit around the fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate.

While browsing Stay Cotswold, I found their collection of Large Holiday Cottages in the Cotswolds, and it was lovely to see how many different options are available for families and larger groups.

What I particularly liked was how easy the website was to navigate. The properties are clearly listed, with useful information about the number of guests they accommodate, bedrooms, bathrooms and facilities. You can get a good idea of what each property offers without having to spend hours searching through different pages.

I also appreciate how the individual property listings highlight practical details that can make a difference when travelling with family. Whether you are looking for a garden, a fireplace, parking facilities, a nearby pub or somewhere that welcomes pets, having these details readily available makes the planning process so much easier.

And if you are organising a family reunion, birthday celebration, anniversary or even a Christmas getaway, having a dedicated collection of larger properties is particularly helpful.

Green Farm, Lechlade-on-Thames: A Cottage I Fell in Love With

Of all the properties I came across while browsing, one that particularly caught my eye was Green Farm in Lechlade-on-Thames.

This beautiful property accommodates up to 11 guests, with five bedrooms and two bathrooms. It also has several features that make it particularly appealing for a family holiday.

There is a garden, a hot tub, a fireplace and a barbecue area, along with Wi-Fi and off-street parking. The property is also family-friendly and pet-friendly, with a pub and shops nearby.

But what really appealed to me was imagining what our Christmas there could look like.

I can picture all of us spending Christmas Eve lounging in the beautiful garden, enjoying a barbecue while the children run around and the adults catch up. Perhaps a little music playing in the background, some festive conversations and absolutely no rush to be anywhere else.

And then, as the evening gets colder, everyone gradually makes their way indoors. Snuggling up in front of the fireplace with mugs of hot chocolate, talking about the day and getting excited about Christmas morning.

The next day would be all about a lovely Christmas dinner. A beautifully laid table, everyone gathered around it, the children getting a little too excited about presents, and the grandparents enjoying the simple happiness of having their family together.

Honestly, isn’t that what Christmas is all about?

Of course, the hot tub is another lovely addition. I can imagine it being particularly enjoyable after a day spent exploring the countryside, especially during the colder months. Green Farm seems to offer a lovely balance between the charm of a countryside escape and the practical comforts you would want when travelling with a large family.

Why I Love the Idea of a Countryside Christmas

Living in a busy city, we often underestimate how much we need a little time away from the everyday routine.

There is something about fresh country air that makes you slow down and rewind. Perhaps it is the quieter surroundings, the open landscapes or simply not having the usual noise and rush around you. Whatever it is, a countryside holiday has a way of making even the simplest moments feel special.

I love the idea of waking up to a quiet morning, opening the curtains to views of the countryside, enjoying a leisurely breakfast and deciding what the day should look like without having a packed itinerary.

The Cotswolds, in particular, seems perfect for this kind of holiday. Its charming villages, historic architecture, scenic countryside and cosy pubs make it an inviting destination for anyone who enjoys a slower pace of travel.

And while exploring new places is always exciting, I think what makes this trip particularly meaningful is the opportunity to experience it together.

For my son, it will be a chance to make memories with his cousin. For my parents, it will be a chance to spend precious time with both their daughters and grandchildren. And for us siblings, it will be a little reminder of how lovely it is to have everyone together, even if only for a few days.

Sometimes, the best holidays are not about how many places you visit or how many attractions you tick off your list. They are about the people you share them with.

Planning a Large Family Holiday in the UK?

If you are planning a trip to the Cotswolds, or simply looking for somewhere cosy and spacious for your next UK getaway, I would definitely recommend having a look at Stay Cotswold. Whether you are planning a family Christmas, a milestone birthday, an anniversary celebration or a long-overdue reunion with friends, having the right accommodation can make all the difference.

Their collection of larger holiday homes offers a lovely starting point for finding somewhere that brings everyone together, with options for groups of different sizes and properties with a variety of facilities.

For me, the thought of spending Christmas in a beautiful countryside cottage, with my entire family under one roof, is already making this trip feel extra special.

And if there is one thing I am looking forward to most, it is waking up on Christmas morning, knowing that for once, nobody is miles away. Just all of us, together, making memories that I hope we will talk about for years to come.
