Poila Baishakh Look Book- Embracing The 9 Yards Of Elegance

Growing up I never really liked wearing sarees except for festivals. And it’s only in the recent days that I realized why. You see, as teenagers whenever my sister and I returned home we returned to choices of ethnic wears that our mom would get us. They were elegant, timeless, gorgeous, pricey and everything, just not matched to our taste buds. They were always according to our mom’s taste and it never occurred to her that as teenagers we were yet to appreciate traditional sarees that a mature woman might look divine in, but we probably wouldn’t. Instead of ever trying to understand what kind of sarees we would like to wear she would just keep buying and buying and buying thinking we might actually like the next one.

Despite having many unworn sarees sitting in the cupboard, buying a new one according to my taste seemed like a waste of money, so I never even bothered. And thus I never developed any love for wearing sarees because I never owned one that I liked.

When the reality hit me very recently, I realized that as an adult I never once spend my own money to buy any saree. And as a result of my mom always buying sarees for us even my adult brain to this day subconsciously feels that any ethnic wear and mum will pay for it. So I decided to adult up and let myself fall in love with the 9 yards of pure elegance and treat myself to the handloom sarees that I have so adored from my teenage days.

But before I broke my bank I couldn’t help but style the two handloom sarees that I purchased with much love from a handloom fair right before my wedding. I mean it was my wedding, so for once I go to choose my own sarees.

As for my mom, she still hasn’t changed. When I told her that I’m planning to style the two yellow handloom sarees that I bought during my wedding she instantly brought out a brand new yellow ‘Taant’ saree and told me it would look better. I don’t like Taant, I never have, I cannot ever manage them for my life.

So here’s a handloom Gamcha Saree with Pom Pom that I got for a pre-wedding ceremony that I styled with a custom-made ‘Ghoti Haata’ Blouse. The dhuti that Seiji is rocking is made by my Father-in-law who is a tailor by hobby and passion. He also happens to be the one who made my blouse because I wanted one for such a long time.
