The Importance Of Twice A Day Skincare Routine And The Hard Way I Learnt It
9 years back I found K-Beauty and my life changed forever. After a lot of trials and errors, I finally figured out a routine that worked for me. And soon I was flaunting a glass skin. I followed my routine no matter what. An impromptu night of long drive and I would still follow my extensive skincare routine at 6 in the morning. However, things changed during the first four months of my pregnancy. Forget about twice a day skincare routine, I would go days without showering. I was either hospitalized or on complete bed rest, only got out of bed to puke my guts out.
By month 5 my Hyperemesis Gravidarum started subsiding and I soon started making it up for my skin. Since I am very cold prone and have cold allergy I stopped washing my face at night. And I barely went out, so at that time it made sense. I would wash my face in the shower at noon and follow my skincare routine post-shower. Since I wasn’t indulging in skincare at night unless I went out that day I tried to compensate during the day. But nothing I applied to my face seemed to work as my skin in general looked terrible no matter what.
First forward to a few months after my delivery, I tried taking care of my skin, but again only post-shower. I would be too drained during the night to follow a skincare routine. And I was in strict quarantine anyway. If I had the energy I tried to treat my skin during the day. If I was drained as most days, I would still indulge in a basic CTM. But alas! nothing worked.
The Turning Point:
By the time my baby was 1 and a half, my skin had lost its collagen, I had sunken skin, sunken eyes, dull and uneven skin. My skin’s barrier looked damaged to say the least. And to top it all, I started having my periods again when the baby was 1 and a half, and with that returned my hormonal cystic acne.
At this point, I realized I have to do something about it. So I invested in some new products to lure me back into the skincare world. I started doing facial yoga. And lastly, I started indulging in a skincare routine twice a day.
And the difference the last one made was everything. As soon as I started washing my face twice a day my skin started looking healthy overnight. The effect of facial yoga intensified as well. My skin started making collagen and my cheeks bounced like jello. The barrier of my skin started looking healthy and nourished. My scars started fading and my acne flattened faster.
Going Back To Square One:
Then the temperature suddenly dropped and the baby and I caught a cold. I stopped my nighttime routine. And tada! I woke up with terrible skin right the day after I first skipped my nighttime routine. Throughout the week my skin looked dehydrated, dull, and uneven despite trying to make it up during the day. The acnes looked horrible despite not being active anymore and my skin barrier looked damaged. Worst of all was the fact that my skin lost the newfound bounce. It’s worth noting that I still tried my best to keep on with facial yoga but it wasn’t as effective as it used to be.
I started feeling better in a few days and took a few more days gap and then resumed my nighttime skincare routine. And the very next day I woke up with glowing, healthy skin. Just overnight! can you believe that?
Figuring Out The Key To Healthy Skin:
That’s when I figured out exactly what went wrong during my pregnancy and postpartum days. Once a day skincare just wasn’t enough, especially when skipping the nighttime routine. I used to do my skincare routine somewhere around 1-2.30 in the afternoon. And I was going to bed with all the dirt, sebum, and sweat that was accumulating throughout the rest of the day. Sure I wasn’t going out, but even when all the doors and windows are closed, dirt can still accumulate on a surface. And that’s why it’s important to go to bed with a clean face.
Our skin recovers when we sleep. That’s why most treatment products are meant to be used during the night. And by going to bed with an unclean face I was depriving my skin of that opportunity.
The same goes for the morning rituals. Our skin can produce sebum while we sleep. Thus it’s important to get rid of that sebum and any trace of the night time products right after getting out of bed.
I learned my lesson the hard way, and there’s no way I’ll ever go to bed with a dirty face unless it’s just impossible to.
Anyway, to sum it up, I’m not using many treatment products right now and my morning and nighttime routine are somewhat the same at this moment. Here’s a treatment product that I am using for my night routine and am loving: Minimalist Multi-Peptide Serum.
