ZEE Bangla Shows That Prove Television Is Not Just Saas-Bahu Dramas

If you are a Bengali kid, teen or youth, you are probably tired of the same old saas-bahu soap operas playing at your house and surprisingly to you, you are well familiar with the plots and dramas, at least enough to make memes and jokes out of them. Thankfully, unlike most of my friends’ mom, my mom is not addicted to those typical saas-bahu dramas. However, my late grandmother who passed away 3 years ago was addicted to them and would watch every recap telecasted on the TV. Fortunately enough, she had her own TV in her room, so I was not familiar with the plots like most of my friends were. But her TV would burst loud enough for me to know which drama played at what time.  In fact, almost all the TVs in the locality would burst out playing the title tracks and I still know which drama plays at what time. Thankfully, Zee Bangla has now introduced some unique Bengali serials that are beyond the typical saas-bahu drama. And even more, thankfully, my mother-in-law has switched from watching those baseless saas-bahu dramas to some new serials featured on Zee Bangla.

After our wedding we would frequently have dinner together at my in law’s place and being the straightforward person that I am, I would openly criticize the misogynistic plots from my in-laws of their favourite TV serials. What disturbed me the most was the fact that my husband’s young nieces got hooked to the saas-bahu serials as they would all watch the shows together at dinner time.

Now that shows like Netaji and Karunamoyee Rani Rashmoni are available, it’s nice to know that the kids are learning something good from the shows. Now that I visit my in-laws for dinner often, I got to know about some amazing shows featuring at ZEE5 that for a change has some strong plots and are a lot different than the typical Bengali Serials. Due to our frequent visits, I got to know the plots of some Serials that my in-laws are currently watching on Zee Bangla and I would like to discuss the plots of some of them.

  • Netaji:

It’s no coincidence that I started the list with the show ‘Netaji’. Like I mentioned that my husband’s 4 and 8-year-old nieces love watching shows with the elders, it’s actually a great thing that they are effortlessly learning about the great hero of our nation, Subhas Chandra Bose through a TV series. The patriotic show is based on the life and journey of Netaji who went on to become one of the greatest leaders and freedom fighters our country has ever produced.

  • Saat Bhai Champa:

All Bengali kids are familiar with Thakumar Jhuli stories and Saat Bhai Champa is one of the most popular among them. Zee Bangla has launched a series that narrates this popular folk tale about 7 brothers being buried by their jealous stepmother and their sister trying to revive them.

  • Korunamoyee Rani Rashmoni:

This drama centres around Rani Rashmoni famously known for founding the Dakhineshwar Kali Temple. While her name is quite famous in Bengal with streets and localities named after her, it’s great that her heroic story is being told and watched in the form of a Bengali TV Series.  India has produced a number of strong female figures who stood up against the British during the British rule and our generation deserves to know more of those stories.

  • Trinayani:

This is a show about a woman who can see the future and decides to use her power to help people. As the show moves forward, Trinayani learns how to channelize the power in favour of her family and the people around her.

So as you can see, Bengali TV shows are probably entering a new era with Zee Bangla launching these unique shows. Hopefully, there will be more and more value added shows on TV in future. In the meanwhile, let’s enjoy these brilliant shows.
