How I Overcame My Postpartum Hair Loss
Motherhood has given me so much joy, and so many responsibilities. But apart from that, it has also given me a huge postpartum hair loss. Apart from the fact that I might as well go bald in the near future, my biggest nightmare is finding my hair strands on my baby’s fingers. A baby, that sucks his thumb as if it’s his job. One time my husband found a hair strand sticking out of his mouth and when he pulled it out he found out that our baby had swallowed almost 80% of the hair. It was when I knew I had to be very, very serious about my hair loss problem. Apart from chopping off a significant length, I have done a fair share of research and experiments and here I’ll list the tricks and products that worked for me.
- Trimming:
This one is a no-brainer for me. Whenever my hair reaches a certain length, or whenever I don’t trim for a long time the end of my hair get rough, frizzy and tangled. Naturally I lose a lot of hair while brushing. So I trimmed my hair and it reduced a bit of hair fall. Not much, but every saved strands count.
2. Herbal Essences Shampoo
I’ve tried over dozens of shampoos after giving birth, all claiming to reduce hair fall. However, the only shampoo that showed significant result is Herbal Essences Cocoa Butter Shampoo . Not only do I lose very less hair while washing with it, I also lose bare minimum hair after the wash. It’s worth an investment. You can also get a 35% off while shopping from their official site : https://bit.ly/3lCoG0z
3. Bamboo Comb:
Another no-brainer when it comes to hair fall is to use a wide tooth comb. But investing in a wooden comb with wide tooth ups the hair care game to the next level. Wooden comb are smoother than plastic comb and causes less friction. I have been using a Wide Tooth Wooden comb from Deyga and it has improved my hair fall problem to a great extent.
- Braiding:
Frankly speaking, I hate braiding. It seems like a job in itself, especially if you have super fine hair like me. You’ll always almost find me either in a bun or a top-knot. However, on days that I very patiently braid my hair, there are less hair strands on my bed and pillow.
- Get Serious About Post-Natal Supplements:
Especially iron. I know it’s a tough time to take care of yourself. I for one ignored all my supplements the first few months of my motherhood journey. But soon I started realizing how big of a mistake I was making. Apart from other issues like joint pain(due to skipping calcium supplement), the hair loss was also an effect of iron deficiency. I’m a forever anemic and then I gave birth and then I ignored my iron supplement for a long time. I only took them once in a while, whenever I remembered. However, the day my husband found the hair strand almost swallowed by the baby I started taking my supplements religiously and I will tell you that it made a huge difference.
- Shampooing Frequently:
I doubt that any new mom has the amount of time or energy to wash their hair frequently. I too, like most mom skipped washing my hair for days the first few months. I’ve also read in some articles that you should shampoo less to avoid more hair loss. In my case though, it was the complete opposite. My hair loss problem reduced to a great extent when I started washing my hair more frequently. But then again, everyone’s hair is different so you have to find out what works the best for you.
- Fenugreek:
Well, I saved the most effective one for the last. When I visited my parent’s place almost 4 months after giving birth, I already had two bald patches. My mum started mixing methi/fenugreek powder with hair oil and massaging my scalp with it twice a week. Not only did it stop my hair fall problem, baby hair started growing on my bald patches within a week or two. Currently I no longer have a bald patch and I lose bare minimum hair every day.
So these are the tricks/products that worked for me. And if you are reading this, I hope it works for you too. Apart from all of these, I have also stopped using any hair appliances. I mean a blow dryer was the only thing I used, but I stopped that too. And I would also recommend keeping straighteners or electronic curlers at bay for some time if you are facing postpartum hair loss. Hope these tips helps.
XOXO
Thank you for writing this! I definitely used some of these tips and it has really helped me this pregnancy. I got super serious about postnatal supplements. Ordered the baby blues postpartum hair loss vitamins: https://babyblues.care/ they have b vitamins, collagen, zinc/ folate (iron) other minerals for hair and it has helped my hair more than I could have hoped.
Also I try to braid like you mention or use a soft scrunchie to keep breakage at a minimum
So glad it worked for you.
